How purple tea is made

In the lush green fields of Kenya, amidst the rolling hills and fertile soils, a unique variety of tea is cultivated - purple tea. Not only does it captivate with its distinctive hue, but it also offers a flavour profile and health benefits that set it apart from traditional green or black teas. But what truly makes purple tea special is the meticulous process it undergoes from harvest to cup.

The journey of purple tea begins in the fields, where skilled tea pluckers carefully select the tender leaves from specially bred purple tea bushes. These bushes, developed through years of research and cultivation, boast leaves rich in anthocyanins, the compounds responsible for their unique purple colour and potential health benefits.

Once harvested, the leaves are swiftly transported to the processing facility, where they undergo the first crucial step: withering. During this stage, the leaves are spread out on racks or mats, allowing them to lose moisture and become supple. This process prepares the leaves for the subsequent steps of rolling and oxidation.

After withering, the leaves are gently rolled to break their cell walls and initiate oxidation. This step is crucial for developing the flavours and aromas that characterise purple tea. Technically purple tea is processed exactly like a black tea which is why it is categorised as a "black tea" on our packs. The name "purple" is related to the colour and makeup of the leaves themselves, as you will see below.

Once the leaves have reached the optimal level of oxidation, they are subjected to controlled heat to halt the oxidation process and remove any remaining moisture. This final step, known as drying or firing, ensures that the tea retains its freshness and flavour until it reaches the consumer's cup.

After undergoing the intricate process of withering, rolling, oxidation, and drying, the finished purple tea leaves are ready to be packaged and enjoyed. Whether brewed hot or cold, purple tea offers a delightful sensory experience, with its vibrant colour, refreshing aroma, and smooth flavour profile. With each sip, one can savour the culmination of nature's bounty and human craftsmanship.

The journey of purple tea from leaf to cup is a testament to the artistry and dedication of the tea artisans who carefully process each batch. From the fields of Kenya to teacups around the world, purple tea continues to enchant with its distinctive colour, flavour, and potential health benefits. So, the next time you enjoy a cup of purple tea, take a moment to appreciate the intricate process behind its creation and savour the essence of nature's beauty in every sip.
